Dark rum cocktails

All rum is not the same. In fact, dark rum should be considered it’s own type of liquor! Dark rum is aged and has a deep, caramel smoky sweet flavor entirely unlike the light, fruity flavor of white rum. So it’s not surprising that drink recipes call specifically for the alcohol based on color.

Alex and I are cocktail experts with over 300 cocktail recipes under our belt (and over 50 of them with rum!). Here’s our list of the essential dark rum cocktails that highlight the unique flavor of this type of liquor. There’s 1940s drinks like the Mai Tai and Hurricane, modern classics like the Jungle Bird, tropical drinks perfect for the beach, and even a centuries-old hot buttered rum for sipping on chilly evenings.

And now…the top dark rum cocktails to try!

Lots of great ideas! I came here looking for more ways to enjoy Rum, my hands down favorite spirit, and I wasn’t disappointed. However I was surprised to see one of my all time favorite drinks missing: the Rum Runner.

I originally discovered this drink on a trip to Disney World while waiting out a heavy thunder storm at one of the water parks. After returning home I looked up a bunch of recipes online and ultimately settled on this one:

1 part Spiced Rum (such as Captain Morgan)
1 Part Dark Rum (Myers Dark is my preferred choice)
    1 part Blackberry Brandy
    1 part Creme de Banana
    3 parts Orange Juice
    3 parts Pineapple Juice

mix and serve over ice (I refer crushed ice, but cubed works fine)
optional: float the dark rum on top instead of mixed in

Personally, I’m not a fan of spiced rum so I often just use 2 parts Myers Dark, but it does loose a little nuance. After reading the recipes here I’ll probably try an aged rum instead of the spiced rum in the future.
