Grab 2 ingredients for rum and lemonade
Rum and lemonade is nothing more than the ingredients in its name. But there are a few things to note about ingredient quality:
- The flavor with homemade lemonade is outstanding. You can make a full pitcher or by the glass.
- Use purchased lemonade in a pinch! It’s actually what we used here and it tastes nearly as good…with little effort.
- Grab any type of rum. Keep reading for a little explainer on types…
Types of rum to use in this drink
When it comes to rum, there are several types or categories. Here are the major types we’d recommend using in rum and lemonade:
- Aged rum has great depth in flavor. It’s known as golden rum or añejo rum. The aging gives it notes of vanilla, coconut, almond, citrus, or caramel.
- White rum also works! Light rum has a straightforward flavor rum with the signature fruity finish.
- Dark rum adds deeper notes. Dark rum is aged as well and has a deep, caramel flavor and sometimes notes of cinnamon and spices. (See Dark Rum Cocktails.)
Or, use coconut rum for a tropical flair!
Another type or rum to use in Rum and Lemonade is coconut rum! Most brands of coconut rum are actually a coconut liqueur, because they have a lot of added sugar and a lower alcohol content than rum. Here’s what to note:
- Coconut rum has delicious tropical notes: and sugar! It’s got a delightful coconut-y finish. This version will be sweeter than with the types of rum above.
- Malibu Coconut Rum was launched in 1982 as a way for bartenders to simplify making the Piña Colada. It’s the most popular brand on the market, but there are many others you can try out.
Make it by the pitcher or glass
Rum and lemonade is so laid-back, you can make it several different ways. It’s great for entertaining with a big pitcher, but most often we make it as a glass. As we mentioned up top, it’s loads tastier with homemade lemonade.
- Make the homemade lemonade. Make a big pitcher, or a single serving of homemade lemonade! Go to that post and search for the “by the glass” variation.
- Try fruity variations. You can also pair with with various fruity flavors of lemonade like watermelon lemonade, strawberry lemonade, or lavender lemonade.
- For the pitcher, use 6 cups lemonade and 2 cups rum.
- For the glass, use ¾ cup lemonade and ¼ cup rum.
More spiked lemonade
Lemonade pairs with just about any type of alcohol! In fact, we’ve tried out every version just to make sure they’re delicious. (And they are.) Here are some favorite spiked lemonade recipes to try:
- Go classic with Vodka Lemonade or Gin and Lemonade
- Try zesty Tequila Lemonade (almost like a margarita!)
- Add whiskey for Whiskey Lemonade or Bourbon Lemonade
