Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer, and what better way to celebrate than with a backyard barbecue or potluck? Every year, Alex and I fire up the grill and get ready for our favorite summer flavors!

This year we’re trying to take it slow and chill to decompress from a busy year, but we’ll still make a mini-feast. Here are all my favorite Memorial Day recipe ideas from our website for the holiday—created, tasted, and approved by Alex and me and our family!

Types of Memorial Day recipes

When you think of Memorial Day recipes, there are a few categories of foods that fit into this holiday:

  • Grilled foods are a staple of any Memorial Day cookout, like burgers, grilled salmon or chicken, and veggie burgers or tofu. Grilled vegetables make great side dishes, like smoky corn on the cob, asparagus, zucchini, and bell peppers.
  • Summer salads are a must: a welcome contrast to the heavier grilled options. There’s everything from crisp green salads, pasta salads, potato salads, bean salads, and more.
  • Dips and finger foods make the meal fun: like creamy guacamole, spicy salsa, fruit skewers, dill pickle dip, or a classic hummus.
  • Summer drinks are the most fun, like lemonade, iced tea, and infused water are all excellent choices. Or make summer cocktails like a watermelon mojito or a blueberry margarita.
  • Desserts go big on seasonal fruits like strawberries, blueberries, and peaches. Bake them into cobblers, pies, or throw them fresh over shortcake biscuits with whipped cream.

Just a suggestion. When posting recipes for the upcoming holiday, post one week in advance. It’s the Saturday before Memorial Day. NO WAY am I going out to the store!

    1. Thanks for the note! This post was originally published May 16. We sent out two email newsletters featuring it, one on May 18 and one on May 25. You must have come across the later one. I agree with you about going to the store on holiday weekends (but usually we don’t think ahead to far and end up doing it anyway!). Let us know if you try anything: these are all great for anytime this summer!
