This iced coffee soda is the most refreshing way to caffeinate! Add bubbles to cold brew for uniquely delicious carbonated coffee.
Love a good nitro coffee, cold brew, or iced coffee? Then you’ll adore this unique way to caffeinate: the Coffee Soda! Blend equal parts soda water and cold brew coffee for this one, served up in a tall glass with ice. The flavor blew us away: it’s bittersweet and bubbly, with a brightness from the carbonation that’s reminiscent of nitro coffee. This is our new favorite way to drink coffee, especially into the afternoon! It’s essentially homemade nitro coffee and insanely refreshing.
What is coffee soda?
Coffee soda is a drink of espresso or cold brew topped off with club soda. It’s a way to mimic carbonated coffee, without actually carbonating the beverage. The flavor is similar to nitro coffee, though nitro is cold brew coffee infused with nitrogen bubbles. It’s a great way to infuse new life into cold brew, and with no sweetener it’s a very low calorie drink! Here are the ingredients you’ll need for coffee soda:
- Espresso or cold brew coffee
- Soda water
- Maple syrup or simple syrup, optional

How to make cold brew
There are a few ways to make cold brew coffee for this Coffee Soda! All you need is 24 hours. The standard method uses a large pitcher and filter, but you can use a French press to make the filtering even easier! Try these methods:
- Standard cold brew: Go to How to make cold brew
- French press: Go to French Press Cold Brew: it’s slightly easier and less messy, if you have this tool on hand
Or, make espresso!
The other way to make a Coffee Soda? With espresso! You don’t need a fancy espresso machine to make espresso at home (though you can!). Here are a few different methods for making espresso for this drink:
- Espresso machine: Head to How to Make Espresso if you have an espresso machine.
- Portable espresso maker: A portable espresso maker is a cheap way to make great espresso. Follow the instructions that come with this coffee maker!
- Moka Pot (aka Bialetti): Moka Pot Coffee is very strong coffee, not technically espresso. But it works great for a coffee soda.
- French press: This French Press Espresso is very good, and a great tool for espresso if you have it.
How to make coffee soda
Coffee soda is as simple as pouring cold brew and club soda in a glass! But here are a few notes:
- Use equal parts coffee and soda water. This ratio yields the best flavor.
- Add sweetener if you like. We used 1 teaspoon maple syrup for just a hint of sweet.
- Step it up with clear ice. Crystal clear ice makes a statement, and is easy to make at home.
- Top with cold foam. Increase the fun factor with cold foam: frothed milk used for topping iced coffee.
