How to make Kahlua hot chocolate: a few tips!
This recipe is very simple: make homemade hot chocolate, then add Kahlua! Here are a few notes to scan before heading to the recipe:
- Multiply the recipe as needed for a crowd. The recipe below makes two 1-cup servings, so multiply as desired!
- Substitute 2 cups hot chocolate mix. It’s not nearly as good, but it works in a pinch. Also, it will taste sweeter. Because…
- Kahlua is very sweet, so you don’t need a lot. In fact, we reduced the sugar in our standard hot chocolate recipe to compensate for it. When we first tried this Kahlua hot chocolate, we went with an aggressive spike. But it was much too sweet! You don’t need much.
More about Kahlua
Kahlua is a type of coffee liqueur: the most popular brand in the world, in fact! But what actually is it? What alcohol is it made of? Here’s what to know:
- Kahlua is a coffee liqueur made in Mexico with rum, sugar and coffee. Contrary to what you might think, there’s no dairy at all! Kahlua is naturally dark brown in color and tastes like sweetened coffee.
- How much does Kahlua cost? Kahlua is mid-priced: it costs about $15 to $20 for a large 750 ml bottle.
- What other cocktails can you make with it? Try popular Kahlua drinks like the White Russian, Mudslide, B-52, Mind Eraser, Colorado Bulldog, Bushwacker and more.
Variation: make it vegan!
Because Kahlua is naturally dairy-free, it makes it a good liquor for a vegan spiked hot chocolate. Here’s how to make this drink vegan or dairy-free:
- Use oat milk instead of 2%
- Use dairy-free chocolate chips
- Top with vegan whipped cream
