Looking for a sweet, sumptuous hot drink for chilly days? Enter Kahlua Hot Chocolate! This creamy drink is full of big flavor: deep chocolate, vanilla notes, and the rum and caramel finish of Kahlua. The Kahlua is nuanced and subtle, but it’s there: adding a warming effect to each sip. If you’re a fan of this coffee liqueur, this is the winter cocktail for you. Here’s how to make it!

Ingredients in Kahlua hot chocolate

Kahlua Hot Chocolate is simply that: Kahlua coffee liqueur and hot chocolate. You can make it with purchased hot chocolate mix if you like. But the very best way to make it? With homemade hot chocolate! It takes just 5 minutes to whisk up on the stovetop, and it tastes absolutely incredible. This drink is very sweet; if you prefer things a little more balanced go to Spiked Hot Chocolate to use bourbon or rum. Here are the ingredients you’ll need:

  • Cocoa powder
  • 2% milk
  • Sugar
  • Vanilla extract
  • Cinnamon
  • Semi sweet or dark chocolate chips
  • Kahlua

How to make Kahlua hot chocolate: a few tips!

This recipe is very simple: make homemade hot chocolate, then add Kahlua! Here are a few notes to scan before heading to the recipe:

  • Multiply the recipe as needed for a crowd. The recipe below makes two 1-cup servings, so multiply as desired!
  • Substitute 2 cups hot chocolate mix. It’s not nearly as good, but it works in a pinch. Also, it will taste sweeter. Because…
  • Kahlua is very sweet, so you don’t need a lot. In fact, we reduced the sugar in our standard hot chocolate recipe to compensate for it. When we first tried this Kahlua hot chocolate, we went with an aggressive spike. But it was much too sweet! You don’t need much.

More about Kahlua

Kahlua is a type of coffee liqueur: the most popular brand in the world, in fact! But what actually is it? What alcohol is it made of? Here’s what to know:

  • Kahlua is a coffee liqueur made in Mexico with rum, sugar and coffee. Contrary to what you might think, there’s no dairy at all! Kahlua is naturally dark brown in color and tastes like sweetened coffee.
  • How much does Kahlua cost? Kahlua is mid-priced: it costs about $15 to $20 for a large 750 ml bottle.
  • What other cocktails can you make with it? Try popular Kahlua drinks like the White RussianMudslideB-52Mind EraserColorado BulldogBushwacker and more.

Variation: make it vegan!

Because Kahlua is naturally dairy-free, it makes it a good liquor for a vegan spiked hot chocolate. Here’s how to make this drink vegan or dairy-free:
