The first time I made this dip, I was trying to feed my kids some apple slices with peanut butter, but peanut butter was so thick it was hard to get it to stick to the apples. So I decided to make a peanut butter dip and threw together a few things in our fridge and pantry.

After the first bite, Alex said: “Whoa, it tastes like frosting!” Somehow what I threw together tasted weirdly good, and I’ve been been making this peanut butter dip ever since. It’s the perfect healthy snack for parties, kids, or if you’re me, a treat after a meal. When I make this for my kids, it disappears in a flash (they call it “mama’s favorite dip”).

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • So fast to make: It takes just 5 minutes from start to finish with no cooking required!
  • Healthy treat that tastes like dessert: The Greek yogurt adds protein while the peanut butter brings healthy fats.
  • Works for many occasions: I’ve served this at birthday parties, pitch ins, game day parties: it really works for anything!

Peanut butter dip

Ingredients You’ll Need

Here are the secrets behind this peanut butter dip (scroll down for the quantities):

  • Greek yogurt: I use plain, full fat Greek yogurt for the best creamy effect
  • Peanut butter: I recommend using all natural peanut butter if you have it! But whatever you have will do. (You also could use any other nut butter you like, like almond butter, or cashew butter.)
  • Pure maple syrup: None of the fake stuff! Use pure, all natural syrup.
  • Vanilla extract: This adds that nuance that makes it taste like frosting.

Variations to Try

  • Cinnamon Spice Dip: Add ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon for a cozy spiced twist
  • Chocolate peanut butter: Add a few tablespoons of cocoa powder for a chocolate twist; you may need to add some additional sweetener to bring out the flavor
  • Honey Peanut Butter Dip – Swap the maple syrup for honey if that’s what you have on hand
  • Chunky Style – Use crunchy peanut butter instead of smooth for added texture.

What to Serve with Peanut Butter Dip

Green apples are our absolute favorite way to eat this peanut butter dip! I’m partial to the sweet tart taste of a green apple or a Pink Lady apple, so these are my top choices. It also makes it a very healthy snack option. Here are all our dipping ideas:

  • Mix of green, red and yellow apples (looks stunning!)
  • Pineapple chunks (here’s how to cut a fresh one)
  • Strawberries
  • Kiwi slices
  • Pretzels (the sweet and salty would be perfect!)
  • Graham crackers (you know how people do that with frosting? Here’s the healthy version!)

Readers always have great ideas for how to serve things! What else would you serve with this peanut butter dip?

How to slice apples

Tip: How to Cut Apples Quickly

Maybe you already know this trick, but I made it into my 30’s without knowing the fastest way to cut apple slices. (Now that I’m a parent, this skill is clutch!) I use to think that I should core the apple with an apple-corer, or cut the apple into quarters, then use a paring knife to scoop out the seeds. This trick is way easier. Here’s what to do:

  1. Holding the core of the apple, use a large chef’s knife to slice off four sides of the apple, cutting as close to the core as possible.
  2. Take one of the quarters and place it flat side down on the cutting board. Then cut it into thin slices.
  3. Repeat with the remaining quarters!

Storage Instructions

Store this peanut butter dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. If needed, give it a quick stir before serving since it may separate slightly.

I don’t recommend freezing this dip: the Greek yogurt texture can get grainy when thawed.

When to Serve This Dip

I love tricks like this peanut butter dip that work for so many different occasions! But if you’re like me, you easily forget about this idea when you’re on the spot. Like, you get invited to a party with a “bring a snack or side to share” note. Alex and I easily forget what’s in our arsenal (and we do this for a living!). Here are lots of times when it’s great to make this apple dip:

  2. Lilli Belisle says:

Could I add cocoa powder to this? I think it might be good with hard pretzels.

  3. Sheila Chin says:

I would use it to dip carrots & celery! Yum yum!!

  4. Leicia Gillum says:

Would this work with almond butter instead?

    1. Alex Overhiser says:

We haven’t tried it but I think it would be good!

  5. Laura says:

Seriously so good! Can believe I’ve never done this before 10/10.
We added cocoa powder too 😋

You’re welcome! Sounds like you love it as much as we do :)

  9. Deb B says:

Just made for kick off, today. Taste great, just the right amount of peanutty smoothness, sweet and tangy. Made as is, no changes.

  10. K. Mitchell says:

Delicious. I subbed honey for the syrup and my daughter who will not eat peanut butter (she’s on strike) couldn’t stop eating it. Love it!! I’ll try it with the maple syrup next time as well.

  11. Heather T says:

There’s nothing healthy about adding that much maple syrup! This should be a 3 ingredient dip if you want to call it “healthy.”

    1. Sonja Overhiser says:

Hi Heather! The amount of maple syrup amounts to 1 teaspoon maple syrup per serving, which is very low especially compared to other fruit dips that are sold in stores! So we consider this a healthier option. Feel free to leave out the syrup, but the dip will taste very tart since it’s made of Greek yogurt. You may want to try veggie dip instead if you’re worried about added sugar!

      1. Juanita Day says:

2Tbsp of a pure maple syrup has only 100 calories. That would be split by # of servings. I think the calories added by the syrup per serving is pretty minimal.

    2. BillyRose Winslow says:

I make mine with equal parts yogurt and PB, with no added sweeteners; sometimes I add granola and/or dark chocolate chunks. And it is delicious!

  12. Amy says:

This was so good! Simple and easy. I made with plain yogurt as I don’t like Greek. Highly recommend!

  13. Emily W says:

I made this Super Bowl Sunday for a quick snack for my husband and kids – we all LOVED it and the kids were begging for more! Thanks for an easy recipe with ingredients on hand – this will be on the regular rotation.

  14. Courtney R says:

I whipped this up in seconds and it tastes delicious! I cant wait to dip some fruit in it!
