Here’s our latest favorite in our challenge to make every fruit and vegetable into a smoothie: this Easy Kiwi Smoothie! This green puree makes the most of the sweet tart flavor of this tropical fruit, combining it with mango and pineapple for pure fruity flavor!

We started buying kiwi for our son Larson, who loves them, and had the idea of blending it into a smoothie. He loved it even more than the fruit itself! Here’s what you need to blend this up at home.

Kiwi smoothie ingredients

This kiwi smoothie has just a few ingredients: and we’ve customized it to what’s easy to have on hand. We’re hoping you might already have these ingredients accessible in your pantry! Here’s what’s in a kiwi smoothie:

  • Kiwi: You’ll need just 2 ripe kiwi for this recipe!
  • Banana: Room temperature! No need to remember to freeze them (which is our pet peeve).
  • Frozen pineapple: This forms the icy base of the puree
  • Greek yogurt: Greek yogurt adds loads of protein to smoothies, making them more filling. It’s also got helpful probiotics for gut health!
  • Spinach: Just a few handfuls of spinach brightens the color here to look…well, just like a kiwi!

Flavor variations and add-ins!

Blend it up and this kiwi smoothie has a beautiful, tangy sweet tropical flavor. And the color looks perfectly kiwi. In our mind, that’s the perfect kiwi smoothie! But of course there are lots of ways to customize this recipe. Here are a few more ideas for adding even more flavor:

  • Kiwi banana smoothie: Add another banana to enhance the creamy banana flavor!
  • Kiwi mango smoothie: Swap out frozen mango for frozen pineapple. Note that the smoothie will have a more yellow hue.
  • Strawberry kiwi smoothie: Like my favorite chapstick from the 1990’s! Swap out frozen strawberries for the pineapple.
  • Kiwi blueberry smoothie: Swap out frozen blueberries for the pineapple: it turns the smoothie pink, but it’s very tasty!

Variation: make it a vegan kiwi smoothie

Want a vegan smoothie instead? This kiwi smoothie is easily made vegan and dairy free with a few simple tweaks. Here’s what to do:

  • Use coconut milk (and skip the yogurt). Coconut milk is a great substitute for Greek yogurt in smoothies: it comes out rich and creamy. (See our Coconut Milk Smoothie.)
  • Add back some protein! Swapping out the yogurt removes protein. Here are some ideas for adding plant based protein: add 1 tablespoon or so cashew butter or almond butter, or throw in up to 2 tablespoons chia seeds.

Kiwi nutrition

The real name for kiwi? The kiwifruit! It’s also known as the Chinese gooseberry and actually originates from China! You might associate it with New Zealand: it was introduced there in the early 1900’s and they named it after their national bird, the kiwi. There are lots of great nutrients in a kiwi: here are a few of the highlights (source: Medical News Today):

  • Kiwis are very high in Vitamin C: 1 kiwi has 100% of your daily value! That’s 64 mg. So ½ this recipe has all the vitamin C you need for the day.
  • Kiwis are a good source of antioxidants, which help protect the body. (Specifically they are Vitamin C, choline, lutein, and zeaxanthin).
  • Kiwis are a good source of fiber. 1 kiwi has 2 grams of fiber, which is about 10% of your daily need.

Dietary notes
