Ingredients in this blueberry banana smoothie
This blueberry banana smoothie is plant based and features beautiful healthy all fruit: with a little ice and water mixed in! You can also add protein to make it even more filling and nutritious (keep reading for ideas). Here are the ingredients in this smoothie:
- Frozen blueberries: Frozen berries make just the right icy texture. We like making frozen blueberry smoothies because frozen berries are easy to store for using when the craving strikes.
- Banana: The banana helps to make a creamy texture and accentuate the sweetness.
- Water and ice: All you need is a little water and ice to get the perfect creamy texture (the banana and berries do all the work).
- Fresh lemon juice: The citrus amps the flavors! You can also use fresh lime juice: whatever you have on hand.

How to add protein to a smoothie…without powder!
This blueberry banana smoothie is all fruit and water! So if you’re using it as a meal (like breakfast) or want to back protein into your snack, you’ll want to add a bit more to the mix. Here are our favorite ways to add protein…without powder:
- Greek yogurt: Yogurt adds quite a bit of protein, and probiotics for a healthy gut. Try blending in ¼ cup to ½ cup, to taste. If necessary, add a few splashes of water to get it to blend. Note that it will lighten the color to be a lighter lavender, depending on how much you add.
- Almond or cashew butter. Almond butter or cashew butter work better here than peanut butter. Use about 1 tablespoon, 2 for a stronger flavor. This addition dulls the color a bit, so keep that in mind as well.
Flavor variations!
This blueberry banana smoothie tastes fantastic as is. But if you’d like, you can add some nuance in flavor. Here are a few more add ins we’d suggest:
- Ginger. Add ½ teaspoon grated ginger to the mix for a spicy brightness.
- Mint or basil. Add a few fresh mint or basil leaves for an herbaceous spin.
- Lime. Replace the lemon with 2 tablespoons lime for a stronger citrus vibe.
- Coconut. Use coconut milk instead of water. Or throw in a handful of coconut to the mix (or toasted coconut).
- Vanilla. Use ¼ to ½ teaspoon vanilla to add complexity.
- Cinnamon or cardamom. Add ¼ teaspoon cinnamon for a unique variation.
- Mango or pineapple. Substitute 1 cup of the frozen berries for 1 cup frozen mangos or peaches. This will vary the color a bit as well.
Smoothie storage
Smoothies are best eaten immediately. But this blueberry banana smoothie can last for 1 day refrigerated, stored in a sealed container or a mason jar with the lid on. It will become very thick, so just shake it up before drinking.
