Here’s a healthy drink that will take you by surprise with its light, refreshing flavor: this Grapefruit Smoothie! The name might sound like a boring health food, but it’s anything but. This lusciously fruity puree tastes a like a combination of sorbet and ice cream: bright and zingy from the grapefruit, tropical from the pineapple and creamy from the banana and yogurt. Our 4 year old could not stop sipping it, if that says anything! This one surprised us with its pleasantly creamy flavor.

Ingredients in this grapefruit smoothie

A grapefruit smoothie can be made a myriad of ways. Some people like to segment the grapefruit and throw it all in the blender, but to us that takes much too long. Instead, squeeze out some fresh juice, combine with other fruits and enjoy! Here’s what you’ll need for our spin on a grapefruit smoothie:

  • Fresh squeezed grapefruit juice (1 grapefruit)
  • Frozen pineapple
  • Banana (room temperature)
  • Greek yogurt
  • 1 cup ice

Blend it up, and give it a taste: it’s lusciously creamy and citrusy! If you like a sweeter smoothie, you can add a drizzle of maple syrup or honey. But we liked the flavor as is without sweetener.

Why to add the yogurt

Greek yogurt is ideal for smoothies: it adds a creamy texture to the puree and a good dose of protein to fruity purees. Don’t have the Greek variety? Try plain yogurt instead! This would also work with a sweetened yogurt like vanilla if that is all you have.

Variation: vegan grapefruit smoothie

Want a dairy free grapefruit smoothie instead? Omit the Greek yogurt, and add more grapefruit juice as necessary until the smoothie blends up into a creamy puree. We’d also recommend adding more protein, especially if you’re eating this smoothie as a meal replacement. Keep reading for ideas!

Other protein adders

Want to add more protein to this grapefruit smoothie? Typically we’d recommend nut butter, but that would compete with the delicate citrus flavor here. Instead, try one of the following options:

This grapefruit smoothie is…

Vegetarian and gluten-free. For vegan, plant-based and dairy-free, omit the Greek yogurt.
