Dinnertime is hard: especially when you’re trying to make meals for family! There are always 101 opinions, diets, and preferences to please. Plus, it’s difficult to maintain inspiration day in and day out. As a busy working parent of two active children, I know!

So here’s a list of my top family dinner ideas! Each dinner recipe below is a meal that’s been tested by a real family (mine!) and is easy to make at home. From lasagna to pizza soup to fajitas to one pan chicken and rice, I’ve got the recipes you need to make everyone at the table happy.

Top family dinner ideas—recipe list

Pro tips for stress-free family dinners

After years of cooking for my family, I’ve learned a few strategies that make dinnertime run more smoothly.

  • Start with veggie snacks. Put out a plate of carrot sticks, sliced peppers, and snap peas so hungry kids have no option but to go for the veggies. (You could even set out some Yogurt Ranch Dip too.)
  • Work together. Work together with your partner if possible: Alex and I often cook together as a couple, and it makes everything easier!
  • Don’t sweat it if it doesn’t go over the first time. I’ve learned that it takes introducing a new flavor about seven times before it really sticks, and my kids’ tastes change constantly.
  • For healthy ways to end the meal, try bringing out Peanut Butter Dip with apple slices as a post-meal snack that seems like a treat but is full of nutritious ingredients.

Storage and meal prep tips

Many of these family dinner ideas work well for meal prep and leftovers. Soups like the chicken and rice soup and black bean chili actually taste better the next day and freeze for up to 3 months.

Casseroles like the enchilada casserole can be assembled ahead of time and refrigerated for up to 24 hours before baking. The sheet pan dinners reheat in a 350°F oven for about 10 minutes.

Dietary notes

This collection includes options for many dietary preferences: vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and pescatarian recipes are all clearly marked. Many can be easily adapted to meet specific needs with simple ingredient swaps.
