What’s a frozen daiquiri?

First, a bit of trivia! What’s a daiquiri? If you said a frozen slushy drink…you’re actually wrong! A classic daiquiri is not frozen at all. Daiquiri is a family of cocktails with the main ingredients are rum, citrus juice (usually lime), and a sweetener. A classic daiquiri is served in a cocktail glass, and is a mixture of lime, rum and sweetener. Here’s our Classic Daiquiri Recipe. For another spin, the sophisticated Hemingway Daiquiri features grapefruit juice and Maraschino liqueur.

A frozen daiquiri is a daiquiri that’s frozen into the slushy drink that you’re used to calling just a daiquiri. Here, we’ve taken the classic daiquiri and frozen it overnight, making it into a delicious tangy slushy drink after blending it the next day.

How to make a frozen daiquiri

A frozen daiquiri is easy to make: the only difficult part is remembering to freeze the mixture the night before serving! Alex and I did several tests, but we weren’t able to find a good way to keep that signature frozen texture for long unless it was frozen the night before. While we tried versions with ice blended the day of, they were pretty melty. So, it’s worth it to think ahead prior to making it! Or you could just keep the mixture in a sealed container in the freezer, ready to go whenever your urge to drink a frozen alcoholic drink arises!

Here’s how to make a frozen daiquiri:

  1. The night before serving: Mix up the rum, lime juice, maple syrup and water. Freeze it overnight.
  2. The day of serving: Blend the frozen mixture in the blender. Garnish with a lime slice and serve immediately.

A note on rum

Now, if you’re making this frozen daiquiri recipe, a quick note on the rum you use! We recommend using best quality rum. Because the flavor of the drink is all about the quality of the rum. The better the quality of rum, the tastier the daiquiri! So if you’re on the fence about whether you should spring for a few extra dollars on the alcohol, we’d say yes! You won’t regret it.

Serving this frozen lime daiquiri

Because these drinks are frozen but melt quickly in the sun, you may want to consider freezing your glasses before you serve the frozen daiquiri. Or if you’re transporting it to the beach, you could always use a thermos: we wouldn’t judge!

Menu idea: We recently served these frozen daiquiris for a meal on the deck with our grilled shrimp tacos and chips and our best salsa. It was the perfect vibe for the evening!
