Ingredients You’ll Need
This mustard sauce recipe is so simple and tasty that it’s become one of my “back pocket” recipes I use in a pinch. It’s perfect for grilled vegetables, fried fish, and burgers, and I can’t get enough of it! Here are the ingredients you’ll need, which you might already have on hand in your refrigerator:
- Mayonnaise
- Dijon mustard
- Yellow mustard
- Honey (or sugar)
Mix them together in a bowl until combined; easy as that! Get a taste, and it’s tangy, savory, a little spicy, and sweet all at once.
Dijon vs Yellow Mustard
For the best flavor, this mustard sauce relies on two types of mustard: Dijon mustard and yellow mustard. Dijon mustard is spicier and has a sharper flavor. Yellow mustard is a bit milder, but it adds a nice roundness to the flavor and color to this sauce. If you only have one or the other, the sauce will still work! It will taste slightly different, but it works in a pinch.

Varying the Sweetness and Sweetener
I like honey in this sauce, which makes it almost like a honey-mustard sauce. In fact, you can increase the amount of honey as desired to make it sweeter and more honey-forward.
You can also adjust the sweetener to your taste and preferences! Sugar helps create a balanced flavor. However, you can use less if desired, or use sugar, maple syrup, or agave syrup. If you omit the sugar, the sauce will taste very spicy and have a subtle bitter aftertaste.
Storage Info
Homemade mustard sauce lasts at least 1 month in the refrigerator in a sealed container. You can likely store it for longer, but ours never lasts that long! Mayonnaise remains stable in the refrigerator for months, while mustard can last up to 1 year.

Ways to Serve Mustard Sauce
There are so many ways to serve mustard sauce once you’ve whipped up a batch! I originally made mine for these Shrimp Burgers. Here are a few ideas:
- Seafood burgers: Spread it onto Salmon Burgers or Tuna Burgers.
- Seafood cakes: Use as a dipping sauce for Salmon Cakes or Tuna Cakes.
- Salmon: Drizzle onto Grilled Salmon or Oven-Baked Salmon.
- Shrimp: Use as a dipping sauce for Sauteed Shrimp or Grilled Shrimp.
- French fries: Try it as a dip for Baked French Fries.
- Vegetables: Or, dip veggies like Crispy Breaded Cauliflower or Roasted Broccoli.
- Sandwiches: Spread it on a Salmon Sandwich, a Vegetarian Reuben, or a vegan sandwich with Lion’s Mane Mushrooms.
