Need a fun spread for breakfast or brunch? Or looking for a quick fruit or pretzel dip? Whip up a batch homemade cinnamon cream cheese! This deli-style spread is cozy spiced, with just the right sweetness and warm flavor. It’s ultra simple to make at home, and you can use it as a bagel schmear, spread for toast, or a quick and easy dip for entertaining. This one was a big hit in our household (along with this fruity strawberry cream cheese).

How to soften cream cheese

The most important part of making cinnamon cream cheese? Softening the cream cheese first! This gets it to just the right texture to be able to be mixed with the sugar and cinnamon. Here are a few ways to do it:

  • Leave the cheese out at room temperature for about 30 minutes to 1 hour, until it’s room temperature.
  • Microwave the cheese for a few seconds. Place it on a plate in the microwave, cook 5 seconds, flip over the block of cheese and cook another 5 seconds. If it’s not room temperature at this point, cook another few seconds, but be careful: you don’t want melted cheese!

Tips for cinnamon cream cheese

Cinnamon cream cheese is very simple to mix up: you don’t even need any special equipment! Unlike whipped cream cheese or vegetable cream cheese, you can make this one without a food processor. But you can use one if you like! Here are a few tips on making cinnamon cream cheese (or head to the recipe below):

  • Use a bowl and spoon. That’s right! No need for special equipment. But if you like, you can whip it in a food processor: this makes the texture more airy.
  • Customize the sugar to your tastes. There’s a range of powdered sugar quantity in the recipe below. We prefer it with 2 tablespoons sugar, but you can use 3 if you like a very sweet spread.
  • Use milk for a more spreadable texture or a dip. Want to have an easily spreadable texture to your cream cheese, or are you using it as a dip? Mix in ½ tablespoon milk too.

Ways to serve cinnamon cream cheese

Cinnamon cream cheese is the perfect schmear on a bagel, but there are other uses too! Here are a few ideas:

  • Bagels, especially in a bagel brunch with other flavored cream cheeses like strawberry and chive
  • Toast with sliced strawberries, bananas, or blueberries, topped with a drizzle of honey
  • Fruit dip for strawberries, bananas, pineapple, or apple slices
  • Dip for graham crackers or pretzels (salty sweet!)

What other ways would you serve it? Let us know in the comments below.

Description

Homemade cinnamon cream cheese is fast and easy to make, with a sweetly spiced flavor! Use it as a spread or dip.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 block cream cheese, softened
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • ½ tablespoon milk, optional (see notes below)

Instructions

  1. Make sure the cream cheese is softened. Leave it out at room temperature for 1 hour, or place it on a plate in the microwave, cook 5 seconds, flip over the block of cheese and cook another 5 seconds.
  2. In a bowl, mix together the cream cheese with the cinnamon and powdered sugar, using 2 tablespoons for a lightly sweet spread or 3 tablespoons for a sweeter version. Alternatively, use a food processor to whip it together, which results in a lighter texture. Add ½ tablespoon milk for a more spreadable texture or if you’re planning to use it as a dip.
  3. Serve immediately, or refrigerate for 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. Store up to 2 weeks refrigerated.

  2. Lisa S says:

So I replaced the sugar with 2T Maple Syrup…. Sweet enough & very good. I topped the yummy Cinnamon Cream Cheese with Cranberry-Jalapeño Dip (made with plain cream cheese for the bottom but I like to mix the cranberry dip into the cream cheese) because I like to add as many flavors as possible to see what compliments each other. Thank You for this easy & versatile recipe to go with anything. Much Love 🫶

Would this be good to substitute powdered sugar with Splenda?

    1. Alex Overhiser says:

I don’t have any experience with splenda, sorry!
