Here’s a smoothie recipe that’s so simple and so utterly delicious, it’s jumped to the top of my favorite smoothie recipes: the strawberry watermelon smoothie! It’s sweet and delicious, with just the right juicy flavor, with no added sweetener.

It’s a great snack or even works as a healthy dessert after a summer meal; it’s just that good! My 4-year-old could not stop sipping it, and neither could I. As the author of over 50 smoothie recipes, I know you’ll love this simple drink.

Strawberry Watermelon Smoothie Ingredients

This strawberry watermelon smoothie requires only 3 ingredients, the least amount of any of my smoothie recipes. But it’s one of the top in terms of flavor!

There’s something about the melon and berry combination that’s pure summer. This one has a bit of nostalgia for me. It’s a spin on my favorite smoothie at the mall growing up in the 1990’s. Turns out it’s even tastier than the inspiration. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Frozen strawberries: The frozen berries bring in sweetness and an icy texture. I don’t recommend using fresh strawberries, since the frozen ones are integral for the texture here.
  • Watermelon: Don’t make this smoothie recipe unless you have access to ripe, in-season watermelon.
  • Banana: A room-temperature banana combines to make the perfect creamy texture and accentuates the sweetness. Make sure it’s a ripe banana for best results!

Simply throw them in the blender and puree it up. It makes the perfect, sweet-tart, fruity flavor! If some of the fruit isn’t perfectly ripe, you can compensate for the sweetness by adding a bit of honey or maple syrup.

Find a Ripe Watermelon

The most important advice for this smoothie is to make sure the watermelon is ripe. It’s not worth making this smoothie with out-of-season watermelon, which can be tart and tasteless. Here are a few tips for when you’re shopping for melon:

  • Shop in watermelon season. If it’s out of season, it’s much more likely to be unripe.
  • Look for a yellow field spot. Most watermelons should have a patch on the bottom, where they rested on the ground before being picked. If the patch is yellow, the watermelon is ripe; if it’s white, it’s unripe.

Protein Adders

One thing to note about this strawberry watermelon smoothie: it’s just fruit, so it doesn’t have protein. That means it’s best served as a treat or a way to drink your vitamins, not as a meal replacement. But you can add protein if you’d like. Protein makes it more filling and better suited for drinking as a snack or breakfast. Here are a few protein adders:

  • Chia seeds. Add plant-based protein and fiber with chia seeds! 2 tablespoons of chia seeds add 4 grams of protein and 11 grams of fiber (see this Chia Seed Smoothie).
  • Protein powder: Use a high-quality vanilla protein powder. Check out my notes on buying a good protein powder brand in my recipe for Peanut Butter Oatmeal Bars.
  • Almond butter or cashew butter. 1 tablespoon of nut butter adds 4 grams of protein. This may compete with the flavor a bit and dull the smoothie’s color.

Flavor Variations

Want to mix up this strawberry watermelon smoothie with some different flavor variations? Here are a few things to change or add to make a whole new flavor combination:

  • Mint or basil: Add a handful of mint or basil leaves for a herby variation.
  • Blueberry: Swap in 2 cups frozen blueberries to make a blueberry watermelon smoothie.
  • Raspberry: Use 1 cup frozen raspberries and 1 cup strawberries for a strawberry raspberry watermelon smoothie.
  • Strawberry blueberry: Use 1 cup each of frozen blueberries and strawberries in place of the berries.
  • Mango: Use 2 cups frozen mango for a mango watermelon smoothie.
  • Pineapple: Use 2 cups frozen pineapple for a pineapple watermelon smoothie.

And that’s it! Let me know what you think of this smoothie recipe in the comments below. It’s one of my favorite summer drinks because of its big, bold flavor!
