This Greek yogurt veggie dip is good for any time of the year, but it’s especially perfect for upcoming holiday gatherings. When we made the change in our diet to eating mostly natural and whole ingredients, we said goodbye to conveniences like pre-made dips and dressings. I grew up on ranch powder packets mixed with sour cream to create veggie dip, which unfortunately don’t match our current desire to avoid overly processed items with mystery ingredients.

Fortunately, it only takes a few minutes more to make a dip with “real” ingredients, and it’s also healthier to boot! Take some Greek yogurt, dice up a shallot, add some spices, and voila—a healthy Greek yogurt veggie dip for your veggie trays, lunch, or a snack. We adapted this recipe from a few concepts we saw around the web, and substituted Greek yogurt for a healthier spin.

What’s in this Greek yogurt veggie dip?

The key ingredient in this recipe is — you guessed it — the Greek yogurt. It’s important that you buy a yogurt with a little bit of fat in it, otherwise this delicious dip won’t have a robust flavor. Because the spices in this recipe are so simple, you need a high-quality yogurt to make this dip shine. You could certainly choose a yogurt with a higher fat percentage, but we’ve found that 2% fat yogurt has just the right amount of creaminess while still tasting a little tart.

The shallot in this recipe is also important, as it gives this Greek yogurt veggie dip a hint of garlicky onion flavor. In a pinch, you could add a little chopped garlic and yellow onion to this recipe, but I’d avoid that if possible since this dip can easily be overpowered by such strong flavors. Shallots have a fairly mild flavor, which works well in this simple yogurt dip.

How to make Greek yogurt vegetable dip

Homemade vegetable dip couldn’t be easier to make! You simply need to mince the shallot and measure out 2 tablespoons to stir together with the rest of the ingredients. Seriously, that’s it! We used dried herbs to achieve that classic ranch flavor, so keep all the ingredients on hand for those days when you’re craving vegetable dip.

One thing to note is that when you’re prepping the shallot you need to make sure to mince it quite finely. You definitely don’t want to bite down on a large piece of raw shallot when enjoying this Greek yogurt vegetable dip. Besides that, this homemade vegetable dip recipe is foolproof!

  • 18-ounce container 2% Greek yogurt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 large shallot (2 tablespoons chopped)
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 1 teaspoon dried dill
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • Fresh ground black pepper


  1. Finely mince a shallot.
  2. Measure 2 tablespoons of the minced shallot, and mix together with all remaining ingredients. Store refrigerated.

  1. I was just wondering how strong the dill is in this recipe as it’s definitely not one of my favorite spices. Would there be a suitable substitute?

    1. Hi Jessica! I didn’t find the dill overly strong here; it’s more like a traditional “ranch” type. But, I looove dill, so I might be biased. I would say you could probably go with just parsley, or maybe add some basil? It would have a bit different taste, but would still be tasty!

This sounds good–I think I had forgotten I used to like those dip powder packets! :) I make a lot of the things that I used to buy, but my favorite current hack is fruit leather–I bake sheets of it then cut and roll it in parchment and tie each piece with cute string so my kids don’t mind that it’s homemade. :)

  4. That’s honestly EASIER than a ranch packet! I already have all of those things in my pantry! It’s kind of like (the healthy version of) how I feel about boxed brownies… I’ve always found it easier to just make the real thing (I swear it’s only like one extra step).

For school we had to find a healthy alternative for something you like to eat, and I chose ranch dressing (did you know typically 100% of the calories in most ranch dressings are from fat!).   8. Just made this and it definitely was easier than a pre mix packet! I think I got a super strong shallot though, the flavor is very strong-and I used less than called for. Oh well just can’t talk too close too people :)

  11. Yum! I love this! I’ve tried various ranch recipes, none really hit the spot for me, but this is excellent! I added a teaspoon of freeze dried chives, otherwise followed this to a t! Even my husband loved it! I don’t feel guilty eating this dip, knowing exactly what’s in it!
