Looking for a fun way to drink Skrewball? Try the Skrewball Old Fashioned! This spin on the classic uses sweet Skrewball peanut butter whiskey in place of bourbon or rye. The drink could not be more different from the original! Double the bitters and add a little soda water to balance out the sweetness, and it’s got a bit of a Wisconsin Old Fashioned vibe. The peanuty finish on each sip is totally unique!

What’s in a Skrewball Old Fashioned?

The Classic Old Fashioned is one of the oldest cocktails there is, stemming back to the early 1800’s. The drink combines whiskey (bourbon or rye) with a sugar cube, a hint of water and a few dashes of bitters. This way to drink whiskey has held the test of time: it’s just as popular today!

Skrewball peanut butter whiskey is very sweet. So for a Skrewball Old Fashioned, you’ll nix the sugar cube, and amp up the bitters to counteract the sweetness. Even better, add a little soda water to take off the edge of the sweetness. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Skrewball peanut butter whiskey
  • Angostura bitters
  • Soda water
  • Large ice cube

Add soda water to balance the flavors, if desired!

Adding club soda to an Old Fashioned might sound a little odd. But this practice is common in a popular spin on this drink called the Wisconsin Old Fashioned aka Brandy Old Fashioned. This version of the classic drink uses brandy instead of whiskey, then adds a splash of soda water or lemon lime soda to the drink.

Because this drink is so sweet, we like to water it down a bit with the soda water. It balances the flavors more and makes it easier to sip on.

Use clear ice!

Another important part of this Skrewball Old Fashioned? The ice! When you’re making an Old Fashioned, a large ice cube is key. How to make one? Make clear ice. It’s crystal clear ice that isn’t cloudy like ice made in an ice tray. You can slice it into organic shapes that are perfect for any size of drink. There are two ways to do this:

  • Make clear ice at home. All you need is a small cooler that fits inside your freezer. Go to How to Make Clear Ice.
  • Use a clear ice maker. We use this clear ice maker and it works well! It also fits easily into your freezer.

All about Skrewball whiskey

Skrewball whiskey is a flavored whiskey that’s thick and sweet, and tastes like peanut butter. Here’s a bit more about this intriguing type of whiskey:

  • Skrewball peanut butter whiskey is a flavored whiskey made with real peanuts. The company was started by husband and wife team Steven and Brittany Yeng, based in San Diego, California. Skrewball launched in 2018 and has become very popular in the US.
  • Skrewball has a thick, sticky texture. It tastes very sweet, with a strong peanut finish and notes of caramel, coffee and vanilla. Honestly, it’s more like drinking Baileys than bourbon.
  • Is Skrewball really a whiskey? It’s so sweet, it barely tastes like whiskey at all! Whiskey technically should be 40% ABV when it’s bottled, and Skrewball is 35% ABV. It’s labeled as a “flavored whiskey,” so you can go with that.
  • What else can you use it for? Try it in the fun Peanut Butter and Jelly Drink, or these Top Peanut Butter Whiskey Cocktails.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ounces (4 tablespoons) Skrewball whiskey
  • 4 strong dashes Angostura bitters
  • Soda water, to taste (optional)
  • For the garnish: orange wedge and cocktail cherry
  • Large ice cube, for serving (try clear ice!)
  • Cocktail cherry for garnish

Instructions

  1. Add the Skrewball whiskey and angostura bitters to a glass and swirl to combine. Add a large clear ice cube.

  2. If desired, add a splash of soda water to taste: this tones down the sweetness of the Skrewball and is reminiscent of a Wisconsin Old Fashioned. Either way, the flavor is much sweeter than a traditional Old Fashioned. Garnish with an orange wedge and cocktail cherry.
