Honey mustard sauce

Honestly, I don’t think we’ve ever written a 1 minute recipe. But today, we’ve got something new. Something you can literally, literally make in 1 minute: this delicious honey mustard sauce! Now, this homemade honey mustard is intended for dipping. It’s for dunking your french fries and potato wedges and really anything you can imagine. However, it’s not salad dressing: that’s another thing entirely (see our Honey Mustard Dressing). But if you’re looking for a homemade honey mustard for your fries and salmon and chicken: well friends, you’ve come to the right place.

Homemade Honey Mustard

Why & how to make honey mustard sauce

OK, first of all: why make honey mustard sauce at home when there are lots of store bought alternatives? First of all: the flavor. This honey mustard sauce is incredibly real tasting. It could be because of the number 2 reason of why to make homemade honey mustard sauce: you can control the ingredients. There are no additives or preservatives, no high fructose corn syrup or MSG: this sauce is exactly 3 ingredients that you control. Well, plus a pinch of salt: which we didn’t think really counts, right?

And finally: if it tastes so good and it’s healthy, what’s the catch? Well, there’s really no catch, because it is seriously simple to make. It takes literally 1 minute to stir all these ingredients together. One minute! How many recipes are out there that take 1 minute? (Not so many, we’d assert.)

Here’s how to make honey mustard sauce:

  1. Stir together equal parts yellow mustard, Dijon mustard, and honey (local if possible).
  2. Store refrigerated.

Yep, it’s just that simple! Why use two types of mustard? You could use only Dijon mustard if you’d like, but the color turns out a bit too brown. The Dijon flavor is perfect for honey mustard sauce, so here we combined it with yellow mustard for color. For our homemade honey mustard sauce recipe, we used only 2 tablespoons of each ingredient. Of course you could increase the quantity as much as you’d like! We made a small batch because we always end up with little containers of random sauces in our refrigerator and don’t know the origin. Since this honey mustard sauce is so simple to whip up, we prefer making small batches each time!

Local honey

A note on local honey

If you can find local honey, use it in this homemade honey mustard sauce! Local honey is incredibly tasty and supports local businesses. Also, since local honey contains a blend of local pollen, it can strengthen your immune system and reduce pollen allergy symptoms. We buy our local honey at our farmers market; often local honey vendors can be found in your local grocery stores as well.

And since we’re talking honey: don’t forget to support your local pollinators! One of the best ways to help bees is to plant flowers. Bees love sunflowers, bolted (flowered) herbs like basil and chives, and borage (an edible flower). Make sure your seeds are non-GMO and not treated with any pesticides or chemicals.

How to serve it?

How do Alex and I serve this honey mustard sauce? Well as I mentioned above, we love us some fries dipped in honey mustard. These Oven Baked Fries are our go-to: they’re simple and taste like restaurant fries. Or, we spent a really long time creating the most perfect Seasoned Baked Potato Wedges to dunk in all sorts of sauces. This sauce would also be perfect on Baked Salmon or Broiled Salmon. And do people eat shrimp with honey mustard sauce? If so, you could do this Grilled Shrimp Skewers.
