Cherry Granola Smoothie Bowl Recipe

This post was created in partnership with Cherry Marketing Institute. All opinions are our own.

It’s breakfast week on A Couple Cooks! In addition to these chai waffles, we’ve created these delicious tart cherry smoothie bowls as part of our work with cherries for the Cherry Marketing Institute. We used frozen Montmorency tart cherries as the basis for a smoothie, lightly sweetened with maple syrup and a bright squeeze of lemon juice, and topped it with dried cherry almond granola. It’s one of our favorites yet. It’s also incredibly versatile, as it’s vegetarian, vegan, dairy-free, refined-sugar free, gluten-free — basically, almost anyone can eat it!

Montmorency tart cherry nutrition facts

We’re working with the Cherry Marketing Institute to create a few recipes with tart cherries. A bit of info on them if you are interested: Montmorency tart cherries are mainly grown on small family orchards in the US and Canada, and are available year round dried, frozen, and as juice in grocery stores and online. We love them for their taste, but they’re also rich in nutrients, with health benefits ranging from inflammation and exercise recovery to sleep. They’re a great snack since they can fulfill that sweet craving — you can eat them plain right out of the container (our favorite!) or pair with nuts or seeds, which makes for a fantastic combo of fiber and protein. Check out more details about Montmorency tart cherries and their nutritional benefits here.

How to make this granola smoothie bowl recipe

A good smoothie bowl base has a thick texture, almost like ice cream. Many smoothie bowls use frozen bananas to create a creamy, frozen base: here we’ve used frozen Montmorency tart cherries! The best tool for a smoothie bowl base is a high-speed blender, which quickly and easily blends frozen fruit. If you don’t have a high-speed blender, a regular blender works as well, but you may need to stop and scrape the bowl of the blender more often while blending. For this cherry smoothie, simply blend together frozen Montmorency cherries, lemon juice, a banana, maple syrup, and almond milk.

For topping this granola smoothie bowl, we’ve created a special granola recipe using dried tart cherries! We’d recommend making the granola the day before you want to eat the smoothie bowl. It takes 45 minutes to bake, and is made simply with oats, maple syrup, sliced almonds, and dried Montmorency tart cherries.

The key to serving a smoothie bowl is to serve it immediately. Once you blend your smoothie, it immediately starts to melt. Pro tip: freeze your serving bowl while making the smoothie! This slows down the melting process once your smoothie hits the bowl. Make sure your granola is ready to go, so you can immediately top and serve the smoothie bowl once the smoothie is ready.

  1. Instead of using cherries, I ended up using strawberries and it was so delicious. I used to eat eggs in the past for breakfast and never felt as energized as I do now when I eat meals like this. Thanks for sharing :)

  2. i just stumbled across this recipe this afternoon while searching for granola recipes. I doubled the recipe because I wanted to use up most of all the cherries I had! Mine came out close to the ones you made, but WOW. So delicious!!! I would definitely make these again. Thanks for sharing.
